Why Your Hawker Stall Needs a Google Maps Listing
If your stall isn't on Google Maps, you're invisible to the customers most likely to find you: people standing a few minutes away, phone in hand, searching "chicken rice near me" or "best laksa in [your area]." They're not walking the length of the hawker centre reading every signboard. They're checking Google first.
How people actually find hawker stalls today
Word of mouth and regulars still matter, but a growing share of first-time customers (office workers on lunch break, tourists, people new to the area) decide where to eat based on what shows up when they search on their phone. If Google doesn't know your stall exists, it can't show you to them, no matter how good your food is.
This is especially true for anyone searching by dish rather than by name: "wanton mee near me," "halal food Bedok," "24 hour food Singapore." These searches pull up a map with pins and a shortlist of businesses, and if you're not one of the pins, you don't get considered.
What a Google Business Profile actually does for you
A Google Business Profile (the thing that makes your stall show up as a pin on Google Maps and in local search results) gives customers everything they need to decide to visit, before they've even left home:
- Your exact location, pinned on the map with directions
- Opening hours, so people know you're open before they walk over
- Photos of your food and stall
- Your phone number or WhatsApp, one tap away
- Customer reviews and a star rating, which build trust before they've tried your food
It's free to set up. The catch is that it needs to be done correctly: right business category, accurate hours, consistent name and address. Get it wrong and it can end up hurting more than helping.
What happens if you don't have one (or it's set up wrong)
Customers searching nearby will simply see your neighbouring stalls instead. Worse, if your profile exists but has wrong hours, no photos, or an unclaimed listing someone else created, people may assume you're closed, low quality, or no longer in business, and go elsewhere without ever knowing they were wrong.
What's involved in setting one up properly
At minimum: claiming and verifying the listing, choosing the right business category (a hawker stall is not the same as a full restaurant, and Google treats them differently), keeping your name/address/hours consistent everywhere they appear online, uploading clear photos of your food and menu, and asking happy customers to leave a review once you're live.
Most stall owners can technically do this themselves, but between running the stall and the fiddly verification steps Google requires, it often sits unfinished for months.
We'll set up your Google Business Profile for $99. One time, no renewal.
